Synopsis

With a camera in hand, Bob Gruen ventured into the world of rock in search of freedom and adventure. Shocked and inspired by Bob Dylan, he found himself at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, which was also the first event he attended for photography purposes. There, he witnessed Dylan being booed for playing rock instead of the expected folk music. Gruen instinctively captured the scene, a pivotal moment in rock history.

In the mid-1960s, when rock was still undefined and the profession of a rock photographer did not exist, a young man driven by a passion for photography and rock appeared in New York. He roamed various places, capturing moments with his camera. The photos he took eventually gained recognition, allowing him to establish himself as a professional photographer.

Witnessing rock’s transformation into a major industry and cultural movement, Gruen closely followed new waves like punk and new wave in both the US and UK. He developed a close relationship with John Lennon, who had moved to New York for a fresh start, and experienced several serendipitous encounters with Bob Dylan, the man who had sparked it all.

Frequenting clubs, concert halls, and backstage venues, Gruen immersed himself in the rock scene nightly, traveling the world and meeting countless individuals. The once-young man fulfilled his dreams of freedom and adventure, becoming a storyteller of the “Golden Age of Rock.”
