Profile
Yoh NagaoYoh Nagao was born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1981. He graduated from Nagoya University of Arts. Starting with an exhibition at the Parisian select shop "Colette” in 2008, he has exhibited his work in various countries including Hong Kong, Switzerland, the UK, France, Germany, the USA, Spain, Tokyo, and Mexico. Living in Germany from 2012 to 2017, he became interested in his Ainu roots and the relationship between the Western and non-Western worlds. Afterward, he visited Mexico (2016), Namibia (2017), Mongolia (2018), and upon returning to Japan, he stayed in Minamiise, Mie Prefecture (2019-24), immersing himself in the local community's traditional way of life, conducting fieldwork. Based on these experiences, he advocates for the slogan "We are the indigenous people of the future,” depicting traditional motifs and imaginary figures from around the world through collages incorporating photos cut out from fashion magazines. He reflects on the coexistence of traditional culture and materialism, advocating for a return to the basics and human instincts. As of 2024, he is based in Aichi Prefecture.
